These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and The American Council ("Unfold", "we", "us") governing your use of the Unfold app.
By creating an account, signing in, or otherwise using Unfold, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account.
Unfold is a Bible reading and study app. It provides Scripture reading with multiple translations, daily reading streaks and progress tracking, guided reading plans with devotional, contemplation and prayer steps, a swipeable verse feed, highlights, notes, bookmarks and a journal, audio narration, and an AI study assistant. Features may change or be discontinued as the app develops.
Ask answers, exegesis notes, plan devotionals and Ignatian contemplation scripts are generated by an artificial-intelligence model. The assistant is configured to answer from a conservative, evangelical Protestant theological position (the authority of Scripture, the Trinity, salvation by grace through faith). That is an editorial choice made by us, not a neutral or exhaustive representation of Christian thought.
AI output can be incomplete, misleading, or simply wrong, including in its citation of Scripture. It is offered for personal study only and is not professional theological, pastoral, counseling, legal, financial or medical advice. Always read the biblical text yourself, verify references, and consult your pastor, church or a qualified professional for guidance on real decisions. You use AI-generated content at your own discretion and risk.
Bible text is delivered through the YouVersion Platform API and is used subject to YouVersion's API terms and to the terms of the copyright holder of each translation. The New International Version (NIV) and other copyrighted translations are provided under those terms and remain the property of their respective publishers. The King James Version (KJV), the World English Bible (WEB) and the American Standard Version (ASV) are in the public domain. You may not scrape, redistribute, or build a competing product from copyrighted Bible text obtained through Unfold.
You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for activity under your account. Provide accurate information when registering, and tell us if you believe your account has been compromised.
You retain ownership of the content you create in Unfold — your notes, journal entries, highlights, bookmarks and Ask questions. You grant us only the limited licence needed to store, process and display that content back to you and to operate the features you use (for example, sending a question to our AI provider to produce an answer). We do not claim ownership of your writing and we do not publish it to other users.
You agree not to:
Usage of the Ask assistant is rate limited to keep the service available to everyone.
You may delete your account at any time from Settings; deletion is permanent and removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, create legal risk, or abuse the service, with notice where reasonably possible.
The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any content — including AI-generated content and third-party Bible text — will be accurate or complete.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Unfold and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising out of your use of the app or reliance on any content in it. Our total aggregate liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or US $50.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts of that jurisdiction will have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes.
We may update these Terms as the app changes. We will update the "last updated" date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app. Continuing to use Unfold after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms.
